New Alpine tedders and mower cutterbar upgrades strengthen Massey Ferguson’s hay and forage range

Massey Ferguson, a worldwide brand of AGCO (NYSE:AGCO), is pleased to announce it is strengthening its hay and forage machinery choice with the introduction of four new Alpine specification tedders along with uprated disc mower cutterbars. These changes will be introduced for the 2024 season

The new MF TD Gen2 Alpine tedders, which are designed and built at AGCO’s Feucht facility, benefit from its renowned expertise in making lightweight, straightforward and strong machines.

Four new tedders, developed specifically for working in mountainous terrain, include three, four-rotor models offering working widths of 4.0m and 4.3m, as well as a 5.7m six-rotor machine.

Building on the success of the existing MF TD 400 Series, the new models combine well-proven technology with significant upgrades to improve operation and forage quality.

Patented headstock

Like their predecessors, the MF TD Gen2 Alpine tedders closely couple-up to the tractor’s three point linkage and are supported on a novel, D-shaped tubular frame. This keeps the centre of gravity low to enhance stability and safety, particularly when working on steep slopes.

In operation the machine is towed by the lower link arms, with the top link used only for lifting and lowering. A pendulum brake, integrated into the linkage, prevents the machine from swaying and an automatic locking device secures the tedder for transport.

A new spring set-up on the floating headstock helps to pull the tedder downwards and closer to the tractor. This improves ground following when working in curves up and down hills and maintains the correct tine working angle for an even spread. A redesigned, hinge pin also enhances the ground contour following ability.

Proven rotor head design

MF TD Gen2 Alpine tedders are equipped with four or six rotors. The well-proven design employs a straightforward, hexagonal shaft and joint fork driveline with maintenance free universal joints. The greaseable, sealed rotor head prevents ingress of dust and dirt.

A 1:2 transmission ratio saves power allowing optimum rotor speeds to the achieved at low engine rpm. This saves fuel, reduces wear and preserves forage quality.

Super C spring tines are mounted on galvanised supports and are equipped with tine loss prevention as standard. 

Spreading adjustments

Three-position spreading angle adjustment is standard – offering a choice 15°, 18° or 21° to provide perfect tedding in all conditions.

A central edge spreading device, on both sides, is easily adjusted from the tractor seat and prevents losses when working across slopes and in difficult crops.

Synchronised hydraulic folding

Hydraulic rotor folding is standard. A patented centralisation and locking system, along with synchronised rotor folding greatly increases safety when operating on hillsides. An updated unlocking system, made from high grade steel, makes it much easier to use. Along with repositioned rollers for the pull line, this requires half the pulling effort than previous models. 

As well as new plastic, family style guards, MF TD Gen2 Alpine tedders are equipped with new extremity marker boards and come with the option of LED lighting.

Change of direction for mower cutterbars

After two years of field evaluations and customer feedback, Massey Ferguson is changing the disc rotation to towards the centre on its front-mounted and mower conditioner models. Trials show this improves material flow and provides a superior cut, particularly in denser crops.

The changes apply to the following models:

  • MF DM FP

  • MF DM FQ

  • DM TL-V-KC and RC 

  • DM 8612 TL-KC and RC

Discs on the new cutterbar are positioned with their blades at 90° to those adjacent and all turn towards the centre. Power is delivered through a new heavy duty, spur gear driveline.

To further enhance cutting quality is a new, cast iron counter cutter with an anvil, which increases durability and improves cutting performance. This latest design retains the use of existing quick-change blades, with new springs that hold scrapers to improve cutterbar cleaning.
