After extensive on-farm evaluation and testing Massey Ferguson is now introducing its eagerly-awaited diesel-powered AgTV. The new MF 700 Diesel combines economical operation and perky performance with the other highly regarded features found across its AgTV range.
The steep rise in the petrol costs for increasingly more powerful ATV engines means that fuel economy is now the biggest issue facing professional ATV users. But MF AgTV owners can now benefit from not only using cheaper, rebated diesel but also have the convenience of being able to fill-up from home. This not only saves the time needed to drive to the local garage, but improves safety and security by not having to store costly and volatile petrol, says Guy Gibson, MF’s Product Marketing Manager for European Grounds Care and AgTV products.
“We have subjected the new MF 700 Diesel AgTV to extensive on-farm testing. These long-term trials proved users can make considerable savings by switching to rebated diesel, which is literally half the cost of petrol. Our testers also recorded tremendous fuel economy that, in some cases, allowed the quad to travel over 50% further on the same volume of fuel (20.8 litres),” he adds.
New MF AgTV 700 Diesel features:
• 686cc twin-cylinder diesel engine provides superb economy, power and torque
• Rebated diesel is less than half the cost of petrol and provides over 50% more range between fills.
• Automatic two-range CVT transmission with electronic engine braking
• Proven chassis with 200mm ground clearance and independent suspension
• Standard Speedrack with multitude of easy fit accessories
• Option of high capacity cargo box or twin seat
• Backed by extensive MF dealership network
Power for the new MF 700 Diesel AgTV is provided by a four-stroke, 686cc liquid-cooled Lombardini ‘I’ twin-cylinder engine. This uses a single overhead camshaft (SOHC), with two-valves and produces outstanding torque peaking at just 2,250rpm.
“While we will never claim this can match the acceleration and ‘pep’ of a similar capacity petrol engine, the diesel more than makes up for this with its virtually unstoppable torque. Indeed, unlike more ‘leisure orientated’ quads, the diesel ATV just keeps going. It is far better equipped to maintain speeds when hauling heavy loads and while working on steep hills and over difficult terrain,” adds Mr Gibson.
In Massey Ferguson’s own long-term evaluation trials the diesel engine has returned fuel consumption figures frequently exceeding 30mpg – but, of course, this will vary with loading, terrain and driving styles. But it is significantly better than petrol equivalents. Moreover, diesel provides the additional benefit of a much longer range – often more than 100 miles - between fill-ups. (Note: This fuel consumption is based on average ‘typical’ figures gathered during long-term evaluations).
The Lombardini engine is mounted in a similar tried and tested chassis as used by the recently launched MF 650 AgTV ‘3 in 1’ machines. This has an extended wheelbase that is 200mm longer than the standard 1,270mm. This not only accommodates the engine but also allows the vehicle to be fitted with either a cargo box or a ‘Twin rider’ two-person seat.
The diesel AgTV also features the same automatic two-range, continuously variable transmission, with reverse. An electronic switch allows operators to switch from two- to four-wheel drive, while the EBS (Engine Braking System) provides complete control for safe and secure descents down slopes. Efficient braking is provided by hydraulically-controlled front and rear discs with floating callipers.
Fully independent ‘Double A’ arm suspension, with five-position adjustable shock absorbers, provides superb comfort and terrain following characteristics. This system offers up to 200mm of travel front and rear, allowing the machines to climb over obstacles and traverse large bumps.
The MF AgTV’s off-road credentials are further enhanced by first class ground clearance of up to 250mm while a front differential lock maintains traction when required.
Standard rack capacity is 45kg on the front and 91kg at the rear – which is the same for the optional cargo box. The superb Speedrack system (see below) is also standard. Towing capacity is 477kg.
‘3 in 1’ versatility to accommodate passenger, box or rack
In common with the recently launched ‘3 in 1’ machines the new diesel model’s extended wheelbase allows it to be fitted with an extra passenger seat and footpegs or a fixed cargo box.
Conversion is simply a matter of removing the unique MRP Speedrack and replacing it with the cargo box or raised passenger seat and back rest, converting the AgTV into a ‘Twin Rider’ (TRV) version.
Speedrack multi-rack system
The unique ‘Speedrack’ system features special slide in/out fittings that allow a wide range of accessories to be mounted simply and securely. Accessories are attached with a straightforward slot-in pin. Well-built, using precision components, Speedrack racking and fittings do not rattle in use, which reduces wear.
Unrivalled dealer back-up
Massey Ferguson is the only major farm machinery manufacturer to offer a full range of ATVs, designed specifically for work. This not only allows customers to buy with confidence from a large corporation, but also provides unrivalled service and parts back-up from the company’s extensive dealer network. MF equipment is renowned for its strong residual value thanks, in part, to this superb support system.
