Massey Ferguson is maintaining its relentless new innovation impetus with the introduction of a range of new MF 5400 Series models, including two new 135hp flagship tractors with a choice of four and six cylinder engines.
While the new mid-range models have the same hp and model designation of those they replace, they offer up to 8% higher maximum power and 11% more torque. All new MF 5400s also feature a substantial transport power boost plus a host of new output-enhancing features.
Offering some of the highest specifications in the sector, the cost effective new MF 5400 tractors excel in every role on livestock, arable and mixed farms. These important new tractors extend the benefits of the MF 5400 Series’ superb power-to-weight ratio, straight-forward operation, speed, comfort and economy to operators requiring more power and exceptional performance in the field and on the road.
These powerful new MF 5400 Series tractors – from 115hp to 135hp - complement the existing MF 6400 Series. Both of these ranges include a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines across this power sector. No other manufacturer boasts such a wide choice or versatility in this bracket.
All of the new MF 5400s are equipped with the renowned 40km/hr top speed Dyna-4 transmission, with two ‘creep-speed’ option for efficient slow speed operation. Combined with the engine’s transport boost, excellent power-to-weight ratios, compact dimensions, high output hydraulics and left-hand shuttle reverse lever these features make the new tractors true multi-skilled workhorses.

Top engine technology
All of the engines in the new MF 5400 models employ advanced technology including four-valves/cylinder, common-rail fuel injection, waste-gated turbochargers, intercoolers and electronic control. These features deliver up to 8% higher maximum power and 11% more torque across all engine speeds, as well as providing each model with an extra 10hp (ISO) power boost for transport.
The additional 10hp for transport is generated automatically in third and fourth gears. This power boost helps reduce journey times and increase efficiency when hauling trailers, slurry tankers and moving between jobs.
The choice of four- and six-cylinder engines allows customers to precisely select the most appropriate model to exactly match their requirements. There is no need to compromise because both models have almost identical specifications.
The four-cylinder models – MF 5460, MF 5470 and MF 5480 – offer compact dimensions and good manoeuvrability, with great visibility that makes them ideal for working in confined areas and particularly adept at loader work. These tractors are also lightweight, which provides a great power-to-weigh ratio that means they are ideal hosts for front and rear combinations of, for example, mowers or cultivators.
The longer wheelbase on the six-cylinder tractors provides greater stability for road and fieldwork. The length also offers better weight transfer with mounted implements and the need for less weight on the front. All six-cylinder models also have a new front axle design that facilitates fitting the Massey Ferguson’s integrated front linkage option.
Ease of access from stylish pivoting bonnets
The new MF 5400’s engines are now encased in smart new pivoting bonnets, following the same bold styling of the larger Massey Ferguson tractors. These also provide the practical benefit of being hinged at the back to lift high and clear to improve access for regular maintenance.
The six-cylinder models also benefit from features found on higher hp MF tractors, utilising a new cooling package with radiators that fold up and out for ease of cleaning.
Standard Dyna-4 for slick speed changes
The Dyna-4, four-speed powershift transmission, with a 40km/hr top speed is now standard on all these new models. This also has the important option of ‘creep’ and ‘supercreep’ speeds for specialist duties. Top speed is 40km/hr
The most efficient and easiest to use transmission in its class, Dyna-4 lifts output and makes life easier for operators. After starting the tractor there is no further need to use the clutch, with all speeds shifted, under load, with a simple flick of a lever. The four gear ratios can also be selected, without using the clutch, by simply pressing a button on the console-mounted lever.
Speedmatching automatically selects the correct Dyna-4 speed to match the forward speed when changing gears.
MF’s unique Power Control lever, mounted on the left-hand side of the dash, is perfect for shuttling backwards and forwards, leaving the right hand free to control equipment. Operators are even able to set the shuttle sensitivity.
The standard Dyna-4 transmission offers 16 forward and 16 reverse speeds. But for specialist users there is also the option of a 4:1 creep (24/24) or 14:1 supercreep (32/32) transmission, offering speeds down to less than 0.5km/hr and 0.14km/hr at 2,200rpm, respectively.
No need to compromise with talented all-rounders
Since its launch the MF 5400 Series has set new standards in the mid-hp tractor bracket, proving to be cost effective, reliable and truly versatile workhorses that are ideal for a range of applications.
The new engines, with their superb high power and torque and now with transport boost, makes the tractors ideally suited to haulage work, as well as mowing, spraying and fertiliser spreading. In the field, sensitive hydraulics with new lower link sensing and the adaptable Dyna-4 transmission along with the inherent power-to-weight ratio means they excel in a wide range arable roles. An unrivalled range of PTO speeds - 540rpm, 540Eco rpm, 1,000rpm and even ground speed if required - further enhance their flexibility.
The new MF 5400 tractors’ size and features make them particularly adept at loader operation, offering unrivalled specifications to boost output and ease operation. They are the perfect partner for the MF 900 Series loaders, which can be factory fitted and supplied a mechanical joystick.
Fast and accurate response is assured from the powerful hydraulic system. The Visio roof option offers unrivalled visibility, while the standard Dyna-4 transmission has a left-hand power shuttle, which is even adjustable for sensitivity to suit the task - slow measured changes, for example when unloading pallets, up to a fast sharp response when loading muck or grain.
New front linkage for six-cylinder models
A new integrated 2.8t capacity front linkage and PTO are output-enhancing options on the MF 5465 and MF 5475, six-cylinder powered models. Front-mounted equipment boosts performance by replacing unproductive ballast and allowing two jobs to be carried out at once, saving time and fuel.
The new front axle support casting provides a neat, compact mounting for additional strength and enables a tight turning circle.
Closed-centre hydraulics on 135hp flagship models
The 135hp MF 5475 and MF 5480 models feature 110 litres/min closed-centre hydraulic systems. This provides high outputs while improving economy because the variable displacement pump operates only when there is a demand, conserving power and fuel.
Output enhancing options extend choice and improve comfort
QuadLink front suspension is available for the 125hp MF 5470, and 135hp MF 5475 and MF 5480 models. This provides a big improvement in operator comfort, performance and safety, as well as increasing traction by up to 20%. The simple, compact system has a high pivot and free axle oscillation, which helps maintain stability and safe operation.
To further improve comfort and allow owners to precisely tailor the new MF 5400 Series tractors to precisely suit their needs are a range of ‘Comfort’ and ‘Performance’ and ‘Loader’ accessory packages.
