MF 9280 Delta

The MF 9280 Delta and MF 9280 Delta AutoLevel are the latest outstanding products from the invigorated Massey Ferguson – the company that invented the self-propelled combine harvester, pioneered yield mapping and introduced a number of leading harvesting technology developments in between.

“It is AGCO’s aim to become a world-leader in harvesting technology,” says Adam Sherriff, Manager Powered Harvesting. “The new Massey Ferguson hybrid MF 9280 Delta combine is the product of significant investment in research and development and represents a big step forward in harvesting performance. The new combines take the lead for us in terms of combine capacity, efficiency and economy,” he says.

The MF 9280 Delta merges Massey Ferguson’s unrivalled experience in conventional drum and concave threshing with its rotary separation expertise. Together this technology offers high capacity, an exceptional grain sample and low power requirements.

“Each of the key elements in the MF 9280 Delta combine has been developed to not only offer leading technology to boost harvesting performance, but to also improve economy. It employs leading technology in every area from the AGCO SISU POWER e³ engine, the new HyPerforma threshing system - Hi-Inertia cylinder and Hi-Separation rotors - and new Venturi Cleaning System through to the Min-Till chopper with the Maxi-Spread chopper hood option.

“We are confident this combine will put us in the capacity stakes where it matters for large scale producers. Tests have shown the combine not only provides the performance, but uses 10% less fuel for the same output in equivalent conditions,” adds Mr Sherriff.

The world’s most advanced combine engine
The MF 9280 Delta combine harvester is the world’s first to be equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, which provides unrivalled power with class-leading economy.

Key to the efficiency of the SCR process is that it treats the exhaust gases coming out of the engine and does not add any complexity or additional cooling packages, required by mechanical systems. This allows engineers to set the engine, as normal, for optimum power and economy, which results in unrivalled low fuel consumption.

Unbeatable feed from proven PowerFlow header
The MF 9280 Delta combine is equipped with a 9m wide PowerFlow header, which provides a continuous belt feed to gather crops, reduce table losses significantly and presents an even ‘heads first’ crop flow. Crop feeding does not rely on the machine’s forward motion, the belts actually power it into the auger.

“The PowerFlow header, proven and improved over decades of use, remains the best on the market,” adds Mr Sherriff. “There is simply no comparison – it can boost output by up to 73% in rape, 15% in wheat and 12% in barley. With PowerFlow you simply don’t need to use wider headers to achieve the output.”

New HyPerforma technology for leading threshing and separation
The MF 9280 Delta harvesters feature the new HyPerforma threshing and separation system, which combines the new Hi-Separation twin rotor system with the well proven Hi-Inertia cylinder and concave.

“The new HyPerforma design begins with the exceptional Hi-Inertia drum and concave, which is well established as the most versatile and economical threshing system. It can handle high outputs in a range of crops and, importantly, can work in a huge variety of conditions. The versatile system offers aggressive threshing that provides the capacity, but with minimum damage to the grain and straw,” explains Mr Sherriff.

Hi-Inertia – excellent threshing for minimum power
Crops are threshed by the 1,680mm wide, 600mm diameter Hi-Inertia threshing cylinder. This offers strength and rigidity to handle high volumes and its size and weight provide a true ‘flywheel effect’ to maintain momentum, which reduces power consumption.

Threshing starts immediately the crop enters as it passes over a prominent pre-threshing rub bar in front of the concave. The material then works against the ultra-strong 12-rub bar, electrically-adjustable concave which can now open to a massive 40mm.

As it comes out of the Hi-Inertia system the crop flow is split into two distinct channels by the new Rotor Feeder design. This key element ensures a smooth transition into the loading bay area ahead of the two new Hi-Separation rotors.

New Hi-Separation rotor design boosts performance
Separation on Massey Ferguson MF 9280 Delta combines is carried out by the cutting edge Hi-Separation twin rotor system. AGCO engineers have employed their long-standing expertise in rotary combine design to develop the new twin 475mm diameter, 4.2m long rotors, which provide superb separation with minimum power requirement.

Deep auger flights on the rotors pick up the crop in the feeding zone and move it along the length of the rotors by fingers mounted in a spiral pattern. This ‘propeller-like’ design moves the crop and means the fingers work in turn, not all together, which saves power and employs both rotors’ entire area and volume. Two specially-designed paddles at the ends of each rotor efficiently clear the straw and provide even presentation to the Min-Till Chopper or out into a swath.

Constant Flow ensures optimum output
Even feeding at all times is ensured by the Constant Flow system, which guarantees the machine works consistently at optimum performance. It is proven to provide a 15% increase in output by automatically matching the forward speed of the combine to the load on the threshing mechanism. A ‘set and forget’ control, it reacts much faster than is humanly possible and allows operators to concentrate on other aspects, safe in the knowledge the combine is operating at optimum capacity – all of the time.

Venturi Cleaning System boosts output
The new, unique Venturi Cleaning System is designed specifically to handle the high outputs from the HyPerforma system. It generates large volume of air, which is evenly distributed under the entire sieve area and does it this without consuming any extra power. This makes it possible to use wider sieve openings to boost throughput, but without compromising the sample quality.

Min-till chopper with superb spread
Massey Ferguson’s industry-leading Min-till chopper on the MF 9280 Delta is equipped with a total of 108 knives in eight rows and is designed to provide the straw conditions required for min-till cultivations and direct drilling.

The new Maxi-Spread hood option is designed to handle very heavy straw volumes and ensure the material is distributed evenly across the full width of the PowerFlow header. It uses two high-speed rotating impellors to propel the straw to a central, oscillating discharge splitter. The individual impellers can be altered to suit conditions and their speed adjusted from the cab.

Top cab comfort and control
MF 9280 Delta’s extremely quiet and spacious cab is equipped to the highest standard, which befits the combine’s leading position. The renowned Datavision II screen provides superb and easy to use setting, monitoring and control. This offers touch-screen operation of the entire machine as well as providing grain loss monitoring, yield and moisture sensing and, of course, yield mapping when linked to a GPS receiver. Many of the touch-screen navigation controls are replicated on the multi-function lever.

AutoGuide, automatic self-steering, is an output enhancing option that is proven to ease operation and boost capacity by eliminating overlaps in all conditions. This improved accuracy and output is not just restricted to the combine. Trials show that swathes left behind an AutoGuide steered combine are more consistent, resulting in improved baler workrates and denser bales.
